Spooky Canyon

Spooky Canyon - This is a slot canyon and is named because the walls narrow giving a claustrophobic feeling as you proceed into it.

Its the same day and hike as Peek-a-Boo canyon. I had reached the trail-head to find just one more vehicle parked there. The Spooky canyons starts immediately as you land into the gulch. The morning temperature was very pleasant and I had the luxury of being left to myself during this early part of the day to leisurely setup the tripod and camera to take a few snaps.

Peek-a-boo Slot Canyon

Peek-a-boo slot canyon along the Hole-in-the-rock road. This slot canyon is all zig-zag along its whole length, hence as you go through the canyon its like doing peek-a-boo all along the way.

I had picked two canyon hikes - Peek-a-boo and Spooky canyons as I had read that they were quite unique and also did not take long hikes. I had started my day early by 6:30am - first Spooky and then some hike over to complete the loop at Peek-a-boo. Both of them did not disappoint me. I had good company of 4 other hikers and we together helped each other to navigate through the canyon.

The Art and the Artist

As I looked below from the Hidden Canyon Trail, I was absorbed and awed at the beauty of Zion Canyon. The steep naked walls reflected golden red in the summer sun and looking down from sheer cliffs is an awesome feeling. Far below one can see the humble artist - Virgin river - still at work.

Into The Unknown

Navajo Trail, Bryce Canyon National Park - This was day1 of our 10 day journey. We had just decided not to do any hiking in preparation for our trans-canyon hike across the Grand Canyon. However after spending most of the afternoon driving around Bryce Canyon, this short hike enticed us. Turned out to be very beautiful hike with golden color of earth enhanced in the evening sun.

Death Valley Landscapes-4

Mosaic Canyon, Death Valley: It was peak afternoon as I was driving back to LA from my Death Valley 2 day trip. This was my third last point to visit. The temperature at Stovepipe village showed 100F in shade ... This was quite an interesting canyon with great natural patterns. In some ways I got reminded of Coyote Buttes.

Death Valley Landscapes-2

Golden Canyon, Death Valley: One of the days when planning was not correct. I had got up early by 5:30am to do the drive to Badwater assuming the morning light to be great. However Badwater being in the valley - the morning light did not reach down and had hard luck getting some good snaps. So decided to take a de-route to Golden Canyon. Proved to be good as it was pleasant in the morning.

Fiery Canyon

Just downstream of Glenn Canyon Dam and upstream of Horseshoe bend: It was beautiful warm evening just after our visit to the Glenn Canyon Dam Visitor center. The walls of the canyon still seemed to be hot and the water down looking calm. The colors, the snake river, and the closed canyon walls gave a very good perspective.

Whirlpools

Amazing to see the events in time compression. The slow shutter speed collected the frames to give this view of whirlpools. This was a very mysterious ambiance - cloudy sky, rain just coming in, a canyon river and all this inside a big active volcano - just to think of it gives an exciting feeling. The place is en route on Firehole Canyon drive in Yellowstone national park.
